August 2008

You are currently browsing the monthly archive for August 2008.

spent all of friday and saturday in a nuno felt workshop, by arlene watson of san diego. there was lots of camaraderie and everyone went home with a head filled with new ideas, techniques and inspiration.

of course, these pieces still need finishing… the one on the far right has a mate and is destined for someones sofa…

i LOVE the shadows the plane and the clouds make on the earth… or when you take off under heavy, overcast skies, that magical moment when you breakthru into the blue and sunny heavens, leaving the grey behind.

i feel sorry for those who suffer from aerophobia (or the far longer, more cool looking and twice as difficult to pronounce pteromechanophobia). i wish i could alleviate some of your pain.

the view from my officehere is the first picture from my office window. this will be a view-project of what was happening at noon in prudhoe bay. it wont be the most exciting, but maybe it will be interesting to watch a whole season. the bullrail (in orange) is about 40′ from the perimeter of the building, and the conexes are about 100′ out. they are used for cold storage.

i will add at least 1 pix during my rotation, so drop in and check at least once a month. the next update will happen after 4 september. see you then! am

i get to work at a VERY early hour… most days, there isn’t much to see at 3.30a. the past 8 days have also been heavily overcast. NOT TODAY. the lighting was very cool predawn, and a few hours later, i saw sun – the actual sun, above the horizon. as the chinese say, today is auspicious.

my blog is sinister! i don’t mean evil… you may have noticed, zabbadabba is typed with the left hand only…

it was quite windy todaywindiferous

windy is not descriptive enough for what is going on (yes, it is still happening). gusting, blowing and “gale like” come a little closer. thats cos there’s very little out here to stop the wind.

where does zabbadabba come from? to be honest, it wasn’t my first choice. i wanted zim zala bim, but all configurations of THAT were already taken. (btw, this would be my choice of locations in SL also: Sim Zim Zala Bim). so i let my mind wander a bit, and this came next. the single b version was already taken, but that’s ok, zabbadabba looks better with doubles, if you ask me.

it has it all: the letter z, doubles, and a great visual repetition.

… and once i found the definition of abba dabba, i was hooked.

it was appropriate that the topic was green for this weeks’ 100 word challenge, cos the green is quickly leaving the tundra. most of the caribou have left, and there are only a few birds still around.  there is still a pair of  loons that are hanging tight, maybe they didn’t get the memo…

loons like their privacy; i wasn’t able to get close enough to determine if this was an arctic or a pacific loon… in other useless facts, they can focus their eyes both above and below the water. this helps when you are diving deep for your dinner. also, their bones are mostly solid, unlike other birds.

take a moment to check out the 100 word challenge; you can hear (or read) mr simons’ daily entries, or find the weekly challenge on saturdays – vote for your favorites! the link is to the left…

i went into secondlife today, after not having been in for a while (ta cg!). if you dont know about secondlife, please check out the link in the sidebar. i am not the person to fill you in on the beta. for that, check out *sl under the radar*, or follow a secondlife link from laurence simons’ *100 word podcast*.

secondlife reminds me of playing chess. there is a big learning curve; after you are familiar with the peices, and how they move, you start to feel a little bit confident. you start to make friends, got to places, acquire inventory. you know what all the pieces do, but you arent making any power plays yet, and that’s where i am at the moment. once you’ve put in a fair amount of time, things should start to take off exponentially. don’t know if i will ever be able to take on big blue, but i am willing to have a try.

there is all kinds of creative content in there – from music to storytelling, the almost realistic to the totally fanastic. people are building amazing sims – and the content changes all the time.

if you do go in for the first time, and you survive orientation island, a good place to start exploring is the destination station. search for *destination station*. once you teleport there, you will find links to sims worth seeing. look around with an open mind, and be prepared to be dazzled.

hope to see you soon!

hiding behind my firewallhiding behind my firewall….

firewalls are a minor menace in my life cos they bog down communication at the most inconvenient times, with no apparent rhyme or reason.

on the plus side, they ARE toasty;  i think i have some dark chocolate, and i’ll make a s’more now….
